Facebook: Crossing Over to the Dark Side

Ummm, I never thought I'd join Facebook (I said the same about blogging many years ago), but this week, when the chapter I was revising was driving me nutty, I decided that I'll make a Facebook account so that I can keep in better touch with many of my family and friends. Is this the height of procrastination or what?

It is an easier way to stay in touch and I can see why so many people prefer it to writing letters. But I could never give that up. I'm just too old-fashioned.

I have a lot to learn about using Facebook. I'm not sure I will ever get used to the busy platform and it's too early to tell whether it is a blessing or a burden. I have enjoyed seeing lovely photographs and funny family moments. It's been great to connect with some of my old friends. I even discovered a group of parents here who swap textbooks and such. I suppose, like anything we do on the computer, I'll need to watch how much time I spend *connecting* and not doing the work I need to be doing. We shall see. Even if I'm not active, I'll probably still keep my account to catch up on my family and friends' lives.

Oh, that chapter I was revising ... I did finish ... two days later :) It's funny how I resolved to not procrastinate the month of June. Look at the backlash! Oy! Pray for me.

This is my page.
It's a lot easier going to people's pages.
You can catch up on all their news.
This is my feed page.
It's a constant stream of information,
not organized in any way, just by the time it was posted.

Noooo! Now I'm the only person in America not on FB!
Just kidding. 😉 The truth is I often feel left out and isolated because so many friends prioritize fb communication over in person communication, but the burden is truly on me to reach out on my part. I just know fb wouldn't be good for me or my family, but I appreciate the updates from family members who are on it!

I had a Facebook account for a few years that I NEVER so much as looked at.
Then...
Kids went to college, and wah-d-ye-know, they prefer Facebook chat to any other way of communicating. Email "is for old people or official letters" (since when?) and phone calls? forgetaboutit. Texting is ok, but facebook rules.
So I became a Facebookie.
Just remember that you can spend as much or as little time on it as is right for you. You are in charge, even if it doesn't always feel this way.
I joined Twitter with little enthusiasm because of a professional association that urged such, and I am still not a Twit-head. Haven't felt the charm of it so far.

Faith, I don't think FB would work for you either. But then how is it that you can see family updates?

Mirka, you make me laugh! That is exactly why my sister made an acct. I just hope nobody forgets to write real letters. And Twitter -- many friends are encouraging me but I just don't get it. But never say never again.

I don't think I'll ever join it. Maybe it's easy for me to resist because most of my relatives and friends are local or keep in touch by email or phone.

I do like Twitter. It's not much of a time commitment, it's fun, and I can ignore it without feeling I'm missing something. But I don't think it would be a good way to keep in touch with relatives.
