Haiti

The tragedy in Haiti always reminds me of poor places like India, where a flood or an earthquake can wipe out thousands in a day. We are so fortunate in America, that when natural disaster strikes, that our losses number in the tens or hundreds.

My friend, Jen Heger, has a lovely post on what she has observed here. Go read it.

And if you are in a position to help, please do so. There are many organizations. One of my favorites is Catholic Relief Services. They operate worldwide and have an extremely low overhead -- 10%. Also, many big companies like Boeing and Microsoft make matching donations, so don't forget that option as well.

And as always, God listens to the prayers of His people. So don't forget to pray.

Christian Aid is also very good, as is ActionAid.

If any people deserved a break, the Haitians surely do. They've got terrible poverty, a high fetal mortality rate, disease, unstable politics, other natural disasters -- and now this catastrophic earthquake. It's just heartbreaking.

I'm heartsick about Haiti. It's so close to home...The Red Cross and the Salvation Army are also trustworthy organizations.

And Vijaya, I've got a little something for you on my blog.

This is so great. My paster was talking in church and saying it's sad that it took an earthquake and so many deaths for the world to see the need of those in Haiti. He's right. There are so many places that need our help and love. Thanks for sharing!

My heart breaks for everyone in Haiti. No matter how much we do, it just doesn't seem like enough. Thank you for this lovely post and reminder of all the reputable organizations and ways to help.

It does make your heart break, no? But as overwhelming as it may seem, we don't have to save everybody, but just one or two ... and if everybody does that little bit, it makes a difference. That's what my mom told me.

Thank you for posting this, Vijaya. We all need to keep this in the forefront of our prayers.
