Dominican Republic Supports Life

Imagine how we got to this point. In one generation, we’ve gone from abortion being unthinkable to the majority of civilized society, to the defense of human life being a controversial issue. So writes Sheila Liaugminas. Read the rest of the article here.

What is legal is not necessarily moral. Slavery was legal. In fact, the wording for defending slavery is similar to the right to have an abortion.

I believe that just as slavery was abolished, that one day abortion will be abolished as well. We need to work towards strengthening the family, and teaching our children to save sexual relations for marriage. Promiscuity has taken a terrible toll on our babies.

Vijaya, it is so courageous of you to post this. The topic is certainly controversial. I think that what is the most difficult in that debate is figuring out where one's freedom of actions starts and where it ends.

An embryo isn't even born as a baby yet, and as such does not have the opportunity to defend him or herself (don't have a sex after some weeks?)...

Sensitive question. Thank you for posting.

Thank you Mirror and Nathalie for your support and discussion.

It shouldn't be a controversy is the point of the original article. Life should always be precious.

But this decision is controversial BECAUSE abortion has been legalized in many countries in the name of privacy, and freedom of choice. All arguments for abortion strip the developing baby of its humanity.

The freedom of choice exists -- when a woman says yes or no to sex. If that union creates a new being, it has a right to live, even though it is completely dependent upon its mother.

Dependence on another human for your survival shouldn't be a criterion for whether you have the right to live. By that analogy, the old, infirm, disabled and perfectly healthy children could be killed without censure. The unborn are the most vulnerable because they have no voice.

I totally agree with you Vijaya. Abortion is just plain wrong and murderous no matter what the reason. We women were given the gift to bear life. We are supposed to protect the life in our womb and it's so sad that under the name of women's right we have defiled the honor that God bestowed on us. I pray that some day all countries protect life from conception. Thanks for posting this.

I am glad I never put myself or had someone else put me into a situation where I had to make a choice.

Amen, Suman.

Bish, you and I are both lucky. But I've known five women who did choose to have the abortion -- they were young and frightened and felt they had no way to support the baby -- and no matter the reason, all five regret it. It was, and remains, devastating.
