Happy Birthday, Ai

Today is my mother's birthday. I had hoped to make a cake to celebrate, but I was too ill. Instead I prayed the rosary. For her soul. For mine. And for my loved ones.
*
Today I leave you a quote from Vance Havner: God uses broken things. It takes broken soil to produce a crop, broken clouds to give rain, broken grain to give bread, broken bread to give strength. It is a broken alabaster jar that gives forth perfume ... It is Peter weeping bitterly, who returns to greater power.
*
Looking back, my mother was broken. But as a child, I saw her great strength and courage. I weep too, for I am broken. But in this brokennes, friends and family have come to my aid, and lifted me up in prayer. How blessed I am.
*
I came across this beautiful song by Leonard Cohen's and the refrain resonates perfectly: There is a crack in everything, That’s how the light gets in.

She was and will always be the best gift God ever blessed us with.

What a lovely tribute to your mother, who is such a beauty. My mother was flawed too, but all the more wonderful for it.

I love that Leonard Cohen song. 'Cracked and broken' is from a poem by William Blake. There's a very similar song based on that poem by Diana Jones. If you ever get a chance, listen to her sing it -- it gives you chills.

Thank you, ladies. Great mothers are the best blessings of all. I will have to look up that William Blake poem, Mary.

Thank you, Marcia. She's about 25 in that picture, the mother of two boys. My sister and I haven't yet arrived on scene yet to give her gray hair :)

You look so much like your mom! Beautiful. And isn't it the flaws that make us beautiful? Think of ancient old trees. Would they be as beautiful were they not twisted and scarred by the life they've lived?

I LOVED Leonard Cohen and that is some beautiful song.

Thank you, Bish. You and Mary touch upon the same thing ... yes, the flaws make us all too human and vulnerable and beautiful.
