Salvation on Sand Mountain and this Writing Life

Michael read me this wonderful quote from Salvation on Sand Mountain by Dennis Covington and it resonated deeply within me. This is partly why I prefer to write short stories...because I can see the whole. It's a rare novel that comes in its entirety like BOUND did. I wish more stories came fully formed; what a gift it is.

Oh, my. Snake handling is truly something I can't stomach.

I hope you never have to then. My mother used my new, and never-before-used hockey stick to kill a snake and I've never forgotten it. She also had to fling a snake out of our bed. I've handled snakes at the zoo and also a friend's pet and they're not nearly as frightening as I expected them to be. They are smooth and not at all slippery. I've had garden snakes go over my feet--they are so quick. But I would not want one in my house.
