Civil Rights and the New Civil Rights

Joyce and Carol write Talking Story and this month they're talking about civil rights ... and guess who introduced a few books? We were also going to talk about To Kill a Mockingbird but that would ruin the alliteration ...

I've been reading a lot about diversity and gay rights and how it's the new civil rights movement but something doesn't ring true. It all *seems* very Christian to embrace everything and everybody but if we say everything is good and true, then really, nothing is.

How can the Indian practice of female infanticide be good? Or the Muslim practice of having four wives? Or homosexual relations? If you subscribe to a Christian worldview, these and many other things are NOT good.

I want my children to know about other cultures and religions. Yes! But I want them to know their own, so they can know the difference between right and wrong, and have the courage to stand up for what is right, to fight for and defend the Truth.

What is truth? Pilate asked that of Jesus.

We are living in an age where people speak of my truth and your truth and it is hogwash. Truth is simply how it is. The reality. And I am afraid that today we choose to have blinders. Diversity and multiculturalism are the new religion and it sounds nice and inclusive, but it is eroding our sense of right and wrong. But look deep into your heart. Truth is written upon your heart. You know it is wrong to kill.

The new civil rights issue is the right to live.

You do not have to be a Christian to know this. However, religion imposes a morality that sometimes the legal system fails to. The US Supreme Court made a grave error in not defending the life of the most vulnerable Jan. 22, 1973. Nearly 60 million babies have perished since then in the US alone. These are our children.

It is the Christian sense of the dignity of every human being that eventually abolished slavery, that gave women their rights, that promoted equal rights for different races and it is the Christian who protects the unborn, the infirm, and the destitute.

Jan. 22 is a day of penance in the US. Let us all fast and pray to end abortion.

ETA: The Supreme Court will be meeting again to rule on marriage. Let us pray they do not make another massive blunder by saying marriage is constitutionally protected between anybody. It will mean the death of families.

As always Msgr. Pope writes with wisdom and eloquence on all matters. Please read his reflection for today:  http://blog.adw.org/2015/01/who-gets-hurt-at-least-50-million-and-then-some/

Sometimes I think things were easier a few decades ago. I feel sorry, in part, for children growing up these days with all the different voices they have to sort through. Thank you for your courage to stand up for what you believe.

Well said Vijaya. If only people would look deep into their heart and search for these truths they will see them. We were all created in God's likeness and as His children we would recognize the truth better if we kept God in our lives. I think, the fact that the govt. has removed God out of schools and public places, how can they even discern what is actually right or wrong. They are moving with what the pop culture demands instead of really looking deep into the validity of the issues. Marriage, as we've known since Adam has been described as: Marriage is the intimate union and equal partnership of a man and a woman. It comes to us from the hand of God, who created male and female in his image, so that they might become one body and might be fertile and multiply (See Genesis chapters 1 and 2).
Anything other than that is not a marriage...
Just because the law of the country says it's so, doesn't make it so. Our country legalized abortion. Legal just means you've been given a license to kill the unborn. It doesn't make it right. Killing is wrong, whether it's legalized or not.
Pray that our country's leaders will be guided will pray and ask for discernment to make the right decisions.

Johnell, I agree. Although moral decay had already set in when we were teenagers, what was wrong was still called wrong, not good.

Suman, you're fighting on the frontlines and for that I will always be grateful.

Thank you both for standing with me.

I TOTALLY agree with you, VIjaya. I struggle with the same things. Very well written.

Thank you Carol. I'm always digging, digging below the surface to get at things. Glad to have another digger beside me.

This is well-written and so brave. I especially loved what you said about "my truth" and "your truth." That bothers me as well.
Have you read The Marketing of Evil (David Kupelian)? It really opened my eyes to what's behind all these changes in our society.
God bless!

Jenni, thanks for stopping by and the great book rec. I have not read it but will put it on my list to read. The description reminds me of another very good book: Confronting the Language Empowering the Culture of Death by William Brennan that systematically showed how people were encouraged to distort the meanings of words to make killing more palatable. As a writer, it was eye-opening. Words have tremendous power.

Vijya- Thanks for pointing me to this blog on diversity. It seems that is a club to beat us with... rather than allowing each freedom to choose good or evil.

I know I can't stop others from choosing wrong. But I fear it will be harder and harder as Christians to be allowed to choose good.

Sandy, it can be disheartening to see the war on Christians everywhere -- I am sure you've seen much on your travels. But we fight the good fight and Christ has WON the battle. I always have to remind myself to hold fast to the Truth.
