Caroline: Little House, Revisited

Every once in a while you come across a book so exquisite, words fail you. Today I started reading Caroline: Little House, Revisited by Sarah Miller and I am in awe. She is a beautiful writer, a bold one, taking on the voice of her character. She inhabits Caroline--Ma Ingalls--of the Little House books so perfectly, I'm lost in her. If you loved the Little House books, you will love Caroline.

I learned about Sarah when she used to hang out on the Blueboards, a generous contributor. Sarah's first book was Miss Spitfire: Reaching Helen Keller in Annie Sullivan's voice. I loved Helen's autobiography so it was a joy to read from Annie's POV. This is Sarah's strength--to immerse herself completely in the person she's writing about, truly bringing history to life.

Oh, wow.
I used to buy a lot of BB published books back when it was an intimate (sort of) candid virtual water-cooler. I felt the best way to support a writer who was contributing to my processional education and well-being was to buy their book. I had three shelves worth. I still have many of them, and should go back to read some I didn't get to.

I also have a lot of BB books but I'd lost track of Sarah after her second book on the Romanovs. I saw in PW she had a new book about conjoined twins so immediately went to the library to see what else she had and found Caroline. Buying it too!

We've come a long way, no? I saw that Ruta Sepetys's first book Between Shades of Gray is now a movie. She's another who's written beautiful books. My favorite is the book set in New Orleans.

I do miss the old BB...such a sense of community back then, and very active. It's always nice to fall into a good book.

Yes, there are a lot of new people so the community is evolving but there are still quite a few of us old-timers there. I'm savoring Caroline so much I won't have to feel bad when it's time to return it, I have my own copy now :)
